Study of the flying geese theory from a political point of view : a Japanese propaganda argument in the post world war II era
2009
The Flying Geese Theory (gankoo keitai hattenron 雁行形態発展論), dating from 1932, is one of the rare cases of a scientific theory that was used as a part of Japanese wartime propaganda, and which also survived and succeeded in the postwar era. It was used to legitimize the 'New Order in East Asia (TōA shinchitsujo 東亜新秩序) in 1938, and the new formulation of the 'Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere‘ (Dai TōA kyōeiken大東亜共栄圏) in 1940. Later in the 1980s the Flying Geese Theory/Pattern became the most successful candidate for explaining the expansion of ‗Asian economical miracles‘ in the postwar era. This study focuses on this famous piece of economical and political rhetoric. The intention is to …
Economic Degrowth and the Collapse of Institutional Order: Theory and Propositions
2022
Integrating insights from new institutional economics and studies on the collapse of past empires, we sketch a process model that links economic degrowth to the collapse of institutional orders. Our thought experiment starts from emphasizing the importance of institutions and enforcement mechanisms in maintaining a sufficient level of economic activity to sustain public costs. We flip this established logic and elucidate the negative role of economic degrowth in the weakening of the public sector’s ability to enforce institutional rules. Internal and external shocks further shake the stability of the institutional order and, at some point, individuals’ belief in institutional rules and nor…
Multidimensional financial development, exporter behavior and export diversification
2020
Financial development shapes export sector performance because exporters need external finance and face credit constraints. Previous empirical research has relied largely on single-country studies. The Exporter Dynamics Database (EDD), which features firm-level exports from over 60 countries, reveals differences in the microstructure of the export sector across countries. In this paper, we first provide new evidence that these differences are related to cross-country variation in financial development and structure. Second, we combine the EDD and multidimensional data on financial development with a global database on export diversification. This study is the first to examine how macrolevel…
Road to unity? : Nordic economic convergence in the long run
2022
This study examines Nordic economic convergence from the sixteenth to twentieth century respective of the economic leaders, in effect the UK before 1914 and USA thereafter. The paper uses a novel approach of combining the analysis of both GDP and wages. The examination of real GDP per capita suggests that there was a catch-up process in play, both with the economic leaders and among the Nordic states, from the early nineteenth century onwards. However, the examination of the adjusted silver wages suggests convergence among the Nordic economies by the end of the eighteenth century. Therefore, we argue, no single Nordic Model emerged from these development patterns, even though the Nordic sta…
Suomen Norjan-kauppa 1957-2002
2014

Regional economic structures in Finland : analyses of location and regional economic impact
2007
This dissertation consists of nine empirical studies which seek to broaden understanding of Finnish regional economic structures. These studies are divided between two topics: 1) regional specialization and industrial concentration in Finland, and 2) regional economic impact analysis. The empirical studies are preceded by an introduction, in which the theoretical background, outline and the main results of the thesis are presented. The research on the first topic is guided by the new economic geography literature, from which answers are sought to the location and agglomeration questions addressed in this dissertation. Evidence is found of increasing post-recession specialization in Finland.…
